Famed Ghanaian celebrity reggae-dancehall artist known as Shatta Wale was born on the 17th of October 1984. 

He was born in Accra, Ghana at the Police Hospital on October 17, 1984, to Charles Nii Armah Mensah Sr, a politician, businessman, and legal practitioner.

Shatta wale grew up with his mother “Elsie Evelyn” at Laterbiokorshie, Dansoman with his siblings, and then later in proximity to Korle Gonno. He grew up in the infamous “Nima” town.

He formed the Shatta movement and has in recent times demonstrated that he can act as well by featuring in his first-ever movie titled Never Say Never featuring Charles Kofi Bucknor, Edward Kufuor, and Paulina Oduro

Education and Early Passion for Music

Shatta was a student of Winneba Secondary School in the Central Region.

Shatta Wale then went to primary school then completed his senior high school education at Aguafo Secondary School. The then ‘Baby boy’ as he was called in high school changed his name to “Bandana” as his stage name and made his musical debut after releasing the track “Moko Ho (Bandana from Ghana)” in 2004.

The song garnered domestic fame and was played regularly on the airwaves in the Ghanaian music industry in 2004 and the single was nominated at The Ghana Music Awards in 2004.

Musical Breakthrough

After the release of release his debut album titled Bandana from Ghana, he then went into musical hiatus until he subsequently rebranded himself to Shatta Wale and released his song “Dancehall King” in 2013, a song that instantly became a hit.

He then reignited his career again in 2013, with the release of the “Dancehall King” his change of stage name from “Bardana” to “Shatta Wale” was in the Music Career and Awards in Ghana.

In the 2013 VGMA awards, there was some commotion when he threw lyrical insults at VGMA because he notably proclaimed they robbed him of the Dancehall artist of the year to a female Dancehall artist “Kaakie”.

Even though the song had vulgar lyrics, it was so anticipated by the media which created his musical breakthrough.

Year Of Return 2014

Besides singing, the critically acclaimed ‘GRINGO’ hit-maker is also a renowned Songwriter, Record Producer, and Sound Engineer. In the 2014 edition of the Ghana music awards, he emerged as the artist of the year. He cemented his status as one of the preeminent voices of Dancehall music in Ghana.

He stayed remarkably active and became the African Artiste of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, Artiste of the Year, and “Dancehall King” at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards.

Wale was nominated for the Maiden GN Bank Awards as the People’s Choice Male Musician of the year. He was also named the 38th Most Influential Ghanaian by E-TV Ghana in 2015 in their annual survey of influential people in Ghana. He is the dancehall Messiah.

In 2015, Shatta Wale asked not to be nominated for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Even though he could have won the prestigious Artiste & Song of the year. For the second time running with his hit songs “Dancehall Commando” featuring Sarkodie, “Party all night” long featuring Jah Vinci, “Wine ya waist” featuring Davido, and “Korle Gonno”.

He had many hit songs released the preceding year: because of an impending court case with the organizers of the Awards Charter House Productions Ltd for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the CEO of Charter House in a video he uploaded on his Facebook page.

2015- Present

Shatta Wale has also won about 40 other awards and was nominated for about 33 awards. They are just too numerous to name. Bandana. His best-known singles are “Dancehall King”, “My level” and “We taking over.

His collaborative efforts have led him to feature new artist Mona 4Reall also known as Hajia 4 Real – Baby ft Shatta Wale (Prod by Mix Masta Garzy).

He also featured social media influencer- Hajia Bintu in the song” Hajia Bintu” ft. Ara B & Captan. 

His most notable feature was with American RnB musician Beyonce in 2019 to shoot their music video titled ‘Already’ in her new album, “Lion King”.

The song was later featured in the 2020 film Black Is King.

Beyonce mentioned that she decided to feature some great African artists to give the album the “feel” she was expecting.

Shatta has been credited with promoting Reggae/Dancehall Music in Ghana.

His greatest song hit in 2013, Dancehall king took command of the musical airwaves. His musical revenue is mostly generated through the hosting of shows which attract most 1000’s Ghanaian youths.

His hard work in 2015, got him nominated for the maiden and highly prestigious GN Bank Awards as the People’s Choice Male Musician of the year.

Commercial Success

Economically, he has been a success in Ghana, gaining popularity and racking up sponsorships from major companies. His usually-savvy investments and partnerships have made him some serious bank.

Main sponsorship deals.

  • In 2014, Wale became a brand ambassador for Guinness Ghana Breweries and as the brand ambassador for Rush Energy Drink with other musicians like Reggie Rockstone, EL, and Fuse ODG. This event was for Made of Black campaign. He was also unveiled as the brand ambassador for Storm Energy Drink
  • In September 2017, Kasapreko Company, producers of several alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in Ghana unveiled Wale as their newest brand ambassador for Storm Energy DrinK.
  • On 17 November 2017, Shatta Wale signed a deal with Boss Baker Beef Roll as the brand ambassador Infinix Ghana, a smartphone company, on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, announced Shatta Wale as Brand Ambassador.

Shatta wale developed a large portfolio of business ventures and investments.

In 2022 launched a ride-sharing project ‘Shaxi‘, a portmanteau of ‘Shatta’ and ‘taxi’.
Shaxi was created as an alternative to Uber. According to the musician, the vision behind Shaxi was to create a sustainable business with the focus on providing employment for the teeming unemployed Ghanaians.

Relationships

Inserrpersable were Shatta Michy ( Diamond Michelle Gbagonah ) and Shatta Wale during their years together. This relationship played out publicly and there was little room for privacy.

Shatta Wale met Shatta Michy when she was 17 years old, and the two developed a wonderful romantic relationship.

He has previous beef with the stone boy, Sarkodie, and house

  • Mother: Shatta Wale’s mother was evicted from the house he rented for her.
  • Elsie Evelyn Amevega had been evicted from the house the dancehall musician rented for her years ago.

According to her, all efforts to reach her son have proven futile after she was served notice to pack her belongings and leave the house.

  • Shatta Wale Allegedly Took Money Meant For Efia Odo; Reason She Is No Longer ‘Friends’ With Him. He was sighted on Efia’s timeline, she stated categorically that while she was consistently fighting for Shatta Wale to get some deals that will put money in his pocket, the “Melissa” hitmaker was also fighting to see her go hungry.
  • . Kwadwo Seldon: Opinionated Ghanaian entertainment critic and vlogger, Kwadwo Sheldon; Had vilified Shatta Wale over his attacks on Nigerians and their musicians.Infuriated Shatta Movement fans who have pinned Kwadwo Sheldon’s comments as a great disrespect to Shatta Wale also took to their timeliness to wash the Youtuber with insults.
  • 4. Actress Jackie Appiah in 2022 allegedly sued the controversial musician Shatta Wale for defamation. This followed recent verbal attacks on her person by the Melissa crooner for allegedly having a different opinion from him.
  • 5. Shatta Wale has taken to his Instagram stories to ridicule Nigerian icon, Davido who recently acquired a Rolls Royce Cullinan. Shatta Wale mocked Davido; deriding him primarily because of his rich father’s influential status.

The Ghanaian singer wrote;

“I don’t use my father’s money for hype.

  • There was a long-running beef ( 2017) between the “big two” top acts in Ghana ” Stonebwoy” and “Shatta Wale” The beef saw them calling each other out severally on social media (subliminally).

The rivalry was fueled by the artists themselves, mostly allegedly instigated by Shatta Wale, who repeatedly claims the title on his records, and regularly calls out his competitors on social media and during interviews.

Especially since winning “Artiste of the Year” at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards as a result of his hit song “Dancehall King”.

The two are now friends in 2022.
