Industrial Production Managers Industrial production managers plan, direct, and coordinate the production activities required to produce the vast array of goods manufactured every year in the United States. Areas of responsibility include production scheduling, staffing, procurement, quality control, inventory control and the coordination of production activities with other departments of the organization. They make sure that production meets output and quality goals while remaining within budget. Depending on the size of the manufacturing plant, industrial production managers may oversee the entire plant or just one area of it. Industrial production managers work closely with other managers of the firm to implement the company's policies and goals. They also must work with the firm’s financial departments in order to come up with a budget and spending plan. Skills Required Industrial production managers need strong interpersonal and communication skills because they work so closely with different departments. Industrial production managers also need good analytical skills, along with demonstrable experience with computers. Ideally, industrial production managers will also have strong leadership and motivational skills. Duties Industrial production managers typically do the following: 1.Decide how best to use a plant’s workers and equipment to meet production goals. 2.Ensure that production stays on schedule and within budget. 3.Hire, train, and evaluate workers. 4.Analyze production data. 5.Write production reports. 6.Monitor a plant’s workers and programs to ensure they meet performance and safety requirements. 7.Streamline the production process. 8.Determine whether new machines are needed or whether overtime work is necessary. Fix any production problems
